LEARNER-CENTERED:

PSYCHOLOGY: MYPSYCHLAB EDITION is designed to awaken curiosity, encourage dialogue, actively engage and motivate students, and inspire them to use the integrated study materials...

  • Chapter Opening Prologues: drawn from case studies or recent news events are designed to engage students from the very start of every chapter. See page 208 for an example.
  • Student Voice Questions: encourage students to think critically about the material, and discuss it actively. Written by students for students, these questions create an ongoing dialogue between the text and the reader. See page 222 for an example.
  • Concept Maps: follow the chapter summary, further emphasizing the key objectives in a highly visual manner. The maps help students to think through the organization of information, and appeal to visual learners who may recall course content more easily when reviewing the maps. See pages 246-247 for an example.
  • Running Glossary: Psychological terms are boldfaced in text and defined in the margins; more difficult terms are defined at the bottom of the page where they first appear. This helps ESL and other students overcome the stumbling block of unfamiliar vocabulary. See page 223 for an example.
  • LINK Feature: Throughout each chapter, when a topic has a relationship to one in another chapter, a <LINK> symbol is provided, with instructions for the student to look at the related topic. These links help students realize the connections between and among all the various viewpoints and research in the field of psychology. See page 232 for an example.

ASSESSMENT-DRIVEN:

PSYCHOLOGY is carefully structured around detailed learning objectives based on the APA’s ten recommended goals for the undergraduate psychology major.

  • Learning Objectives: As recommended by APA assessment guidelines, learning objectives appear in question format at the beginning of each chapter, again at the beginning of relevant text sections, and yet again in the chapter Concept Maps. All supporting materials are also organized around these learning objectives -- making PSYCHOLOGY a fully-integrated system of study. See page xxiii in the Preface for an outline of the APA assessment guidelines. For an example of chapter learning objectives, see page 210
  • Practice Quizzes and "Test Yourself": Embedded Practice Quiz assessments within each chapter encourages students to stop, review, and reinforce their learning before moving on. Multiple-choice sample exams at the end of every chapter replicate the experience most students have with graded assessments. See page 237 for an example of a Practice Quiz. See pages 243-245 for an example of a "Test Yourself"
  • MyPsychLab: PSYCHOLOGY is now fully integrated with the easy, powerful MyPsychLab.com learning management system. Using MyPsychLab.com, it's easier than ever to build customized study plans, assess student progress, and adapt course material to your specific needs. At the end of each chapter, a two-page visual spread details study tips and learning resources available within MyPsychLab.
MyPsychLab is an easy-to-use online resource that allows instructors to assess student progress and adapt course material to meet the specific needs of the class.

MyPsychLab enables students to diagnose their progress by completing an online self-assessment pre-test. Based on the results of this test, each student is provided with a customized study plan, including a variety of tools to help them fully master the material.

MyPsychLab then reports the self-assessment results to the instructor, as individual student grades as well as an aggregate report of class progress. Based on these reports, the instructor can adapt course material to suit the needs of individual students or the class as a whole.

  • Accurate Assessment: MyPsychLab offers robust self-assessment tests to determine each student's mastery of key content areas. Organized by major section or chapter, these diagnostic tests contain a large base of questions that are different from those in the text-specific test bank and other supplements. Different kinds of questions are used for pre- and post-tests, including multiple choice, text match, ranking, fill in the blank, and drag and drop.
  • Reporting: MyPsychLab's easy-to-use reporting system delivers instant feedback to students and provides instructors with reports of class and student performance. Diagnostic test results are reported to students allowing them to recognize the areas in which they need extra practice. Instructors receive an aggregate of overall class performance and may also view test results at the individual student level. Since MyPsychLab calculates and reports test results automatically, instructors can closely monitor student progress without investing any additional time.
  • Focused Instruction: MyPsychLab enables instructors to efficiently adapt course content based on actual student and class performance. MyPsychLab analyzes each student's diagnostic test results, assigns each student specific exercises designed to help with the content they have yet to master, and reports these assignments to the instructor via a gradebook. MyPsychLab's aggregate report provides a valuable "snapshot" of class performance that allows instructors to direct their attention to the content areas in which the class as a whole is struggling. MyPsychLab provides instructors with a wealth of supplemental teaching materials specific to these content areas including additional lecture material, video clips, and classroom activities. For added flexibility, these materials may be downloaded by instructors for classroom use or made available online for student use.
