A worktext format for basic college math or arithmetic courses including lecture-based, self-paced, and modular classes.

John Tobey and Jeff Slater are experienced developmental math authors and active classroom teachers.  The Tobey approach focuses on building skills one at a time by breaking math down into manageable pieces.  This building block organization is a practical approach to basic math skill development that makes it easier for students to understand each topic, gaining confidence as they move through each section.  Knowing students crave feedback, Tobey has enhanced the new edition with a "How am I Doing?" guide to math success. The combination of continual reinforcement of basic skill development, ongoing feedback and a fine balance of exercises makes the fifth edition of Tobey/Slater Basic College Mathematics even more practical and accessible.

How does your current book provide students with repetition, reinforcement, and feedback?

New!  Ongoing feedback:  Now when a student thinks, "I wonder how I'm doing?" the can do more than just guess.  A new "How Am I Doing" emphasis gives students the feedback they crave.

"How Am I Doing?" navigation guide to math success shows students how to more effectively use the text to succeed in this math course.

"How Am I Doing ?" mid-chapter review exercise set lets students pause at a critical juncture to assess whether they are 'getting it" so far.

"How Am I Doing ?" Chapter Test helps students determine whether they've mastered the important concepts in the chapter.

Where do your students get help the night before the test?

New Chapter Test Prep Video:  The Chapter Test Prep Video provides step-by-step solutions to every problem in the textbook Chapter Test, free inside the back cover.  The night before the exam is an important  "teachable moment" and the CTPV helps students better prepare for the exam at a point when they most need it.

Do your students work enough problems?

Do you assign homework? Do you grade it?

How do your students get feedback?

New MyMathlab:  Powered by CourseCompass and MathXL, MyMathLab is a series of text-specific online courses that accompany select Prentice Hall Mathematics and Statistics textbooks. MyMathLab provides powerful homework and assessment functionality in addition to a rich and flexible set of course materials to accompany the text. Course management tools make it easy to customize online courses. MyMathLab provides everything necessary to deliver all or a portion of math courses online.

Chapter Organizers neatly summarize the chapter topics, procedures and corresponding examples all in one place to simplify chapter review.

Develop Your Study Skills boxes throughout remind and encourage students to hone these all-important study skills.

A Mathematics Blueprint for Problem Solving provides a consistent and interactive outline that helps students organize their approach to problem solving. The Blueprint helps students know where to begin, and how to understand the process, plan subsequent steps, and successfully solve applications.

Problem Solving is thorough, integrated throughout and easy to follow with key steps highlighted with the pedagogical use of color.

Putting Your Skills to Work applications provide opportunities to solve real world situations using newly mastered math skills.  Students utilize critical thinking skills, analyze and interpret data and solve using situations encountered in daily life.

Math in the Media exercises offer students yet another opportunity to see how the math they are learning applies to the world around them.

Exercises are paired and graded (easy to more difficult) and each exercise set includes Verbal and Writing Skills and Mixed Practice exercises.

A built-in solutions manual offers worked out solutions to the practice problems and reinforces the problem solving process.

Better Example, Practice Problem format.  Although virtually all worktexts feature an example and corresponding practice problem, Tobey's format has been redesigned to provide better pairing of the practice problem and example into a cohesive "see it solved here, now try it yourself" pattern.  Tobey knows that his successful students gain confidence as they move through each section by working the corresponding practice problems.

New and updated exercises and applications contain 30% contributed by students.

New Appendix A:  Consumer Finance Applications Appendix covers three practical, common financial decisions--Balancing a Checkbook, Purchasing a Home, and Determining the Best Deal when Purchasing a Vehicle and includes Examples, Practice Problems and Exercises for each.

No major changes to the fifth edition organization/table of contents.

Notes: All chapters conclude with: Chapter Organizer, Chapter Review Problems, How Am I Doing?   Chapter Test, Cumulative Test (no Cumulative Test following ch. 1). The Diagnostic Pretest and all Chapter Pretests can now be found in the Instructor’s Resource Manual. The Putting Your Skills to Work feature still exists but is no longer mentioned in the TOC.
