- A stand-alone multimedia supplement (CD-ROM) for Introductory Physics courses — both algebra-based and calculus-based.
- This highly interactive CD-ROM is designed to augment the traditional learning experiences of lecture, lab, and text. It includes several dynamic components — simulation, animation, video, and interactive problem solving — that enable students to interact and visualize concepts in ways not possible in traditional learning programs. Content is organized according to four main topic areas in physics — mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, and light and optics. While the CD is designed to be interactive, professors can use any of the simulations, animations or videos for their lectures.
SIMULATE
- Using simulations, students can ask questions and alter the parameters of experiments to discover the answers.
-
Includes more than 120 simulations of physical systems.
-
Extensions are more complex problems based on the materials learned in the basic simulation. Many take the concept a step further. Approximately one-third of the simulations have extensions.
-
Concept Check questions, available with approximately 80% of the simulations, allow students to test their knowledge of a specific physics concept. They include many algorithmically generated questions.
-
Built-in spreadsheets enhance applicable simulations.
-
ANIMATE
- 39 narrated animations illustrate physics principles at work, guiding students through explorations of different physical phenomena.
-
In addition to traditional animations, this CD-ROM also includes animations which allow the student to observe a simulation in an automated mode with audio descriptions to clarify the content.
-
VISUALIZE
- 62 narrated video segments allow students to view actual laboratory experiments and demonstrations.
-
Students can use a special video analysis tool to conduct “video-based labs,” a research-proven way to help students make mental links between a physical event and its graphical representation.
-
REVIEW
- For a brief overview of concepts, students can access a written review of the subtopics covered on the CD-ROM. Hyperlinks let students check definitions, reference equations, or run a related animation or video in the context of the written review.
SOLVE
- 231 problems help students build critical problem solving skills, through a variety of interactive problem types:
-
Content-rich problems (from Ken and Pat Heller) are problems that set physics in a real-world context relevant to students' lives. They are usually longer problems that help students learn to isolate the pertinent data.
-
Ranking task problems (from Curt Hieggelke and participants of the Two Year College Physics Workshop Project)—ranking tasks are one of many ways to ascertain a student's understanding of important physics concepts.
-
- Video problems—There are two types of video-based problems on the CD:
- —in the first type, students must answer questions about a specific video segment.
- —in the second type, a statement is made and the student must decide which video segment (from selected choices) relate to the statement.
- —there are 32 video-based problems on the CD, with many in the Light & Optics section.
-
149 MCAT review questions— these are based on ARCO's best-selling MCAT review guides, and offer pre-meds review both during and after their physics course.
-
(NOTE: Subtopics within each module have a mix of simulations (many with concept checks), animations, videos, quantitative and conceptual problems, MCAT questions, topic reviews and overviews. Video analysis tool, graphing tool and calculator are resident on the CD, accessible when applicable. Reference material includes an equation list, glossary and list of tables.)
